The Aquarius, a rescue boat for migrants in the Mediterranean, chartered by the NGOs SOS Méditerranée and Médecins sans frontières, has just lost the flag it had just obtained, just one month after being deprived by Gibraltar of its flag . In withdrawing it, Panama decided, under pressure from Italy, not to allow it to continue its operations. From now on no more rescue boat associates will cross the Mediterranean, leaving the migrants in the hands of the Libyan coastguard.

From now on no more rescue boat associates will cross the Mediterranean, leaving the migrants in the hands of the Libyan coastguard. These same coastguards accused by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees to participate in trafficking in human beings. Indeed, being sent back to the Libyan coast, the shipwrecked become the object of inhuman racketeering, torture, and violence. The work of undermining has gone on too long. The Aquarius must find a new pavilion, and why not European? This would be a strong gesture on the part of the Member States which until now have not been very successful in this area.---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This would also show our full support for these NGOs that are filling the gaps in the Mediterranean states. That is why we, socialists and democrats in the European Parliament, have called for the Sakharov Prize.
